Does tea that is more freshly picked have greater health advantages than older tea?


There is some evidence that tea that is more freshly picked may have greater health advantages than older tea. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that newly picked teas had higher levels of antioxidants than older teas. Another study, published in the same journal, found that freshly brewed green tea had higher levels of catechins (a type of antioxidant) than tea that had been brewed for longer periods of time.


While these studies suggest that freshly picked tea may be more beneficial for health, it is important to note that both fresh and older teas can offer health benefits. Does tea affect the absorption of iron?


There are two types of iron in our diet: 'haem iron', found in meat and fish, and 'non-haem iron', found in plant foods. Drinking tea with your meal doesn't affect how much haem iron you absorb, but it does reduce absorption of non-haem iron (although not completely). Also, meat and fish contain relatively higher amounts of iron compared to plant foods. Therefore, If your diet is mostly meat and fish, drinking tea with meals will not have an effect on the body's iron levels. However, if you are a vegetarian or otherwise don't get enough iron in your diet, it is advisable to drink tea between meals instead.


Do green and black teas have the same antioxidants?


It was previously believed that green tea was the most effective type of tea in containing antioxidants. People further thought that it was only the unoxidized polyphenols present in green-tea leaves that acted as antioxidants. However, oxidised catechins in black tea are just as effective in relation to antioxidants. (Leung et al 2001).


Green and black tea both come from the Camellia Sinensis plant. Green tea is unfermented; this means that it is steamed immediately after being plucked. This also results in a lighter colour and flavour. Black tea, on the other hand, goes through a fermentation process before being dried. This gives the leaves a darker colour as well as more bold flavour and aroma profiles.


Does consuming green tea help with weight loss?


There are not enough International standard research conducted to corroborate the fact the green tea helps with weight loss. But it is possible that consuming tea catechins over a long period of time could help reduce the risks of obesity, type II diabetes, and coronary disease.
